Seeing

I think
I'm getting old
It's not just
reading glasses
Or aches and pains
But finally seeing
what we've become.
A world of selfish people
hellbent,
on getting
our own way
despite the cost
to ourselves,
and certainly to others.
We care not
that others are trampled
in this race.
We just want
what we want
when we want
because
we deserve it.

When I was young,
I thought like a child,
reasoned like a child
But now,
I'm old
and I see.
And what I see is
not what I'd thought.
We'd turn out to be.

It's One-Shot Wednesday.  Write a poem and link up!

Hi Tina,
This is a view without rose colored glasses, that is for sure. Great One Shot!

I'm still hoping to remain a child inside, for always. But I guess it is true!As one grow, one lose a piece of the child we were behind.I guess it's only up to us to hold on to the child in us,as not to be swallowed by all the painful realities of life.

It's a pleasure to meet you,Tina!

We humans can be so disappointing. (Watch TED videos for inspiration and restoring your faith in us.)

Tough one shot, Tina. All is not lost. I see goodness every day.

Standing O my dear friend! Wonderful! And I agree with Cheryl...for I, too, am learning to "see" again with newfound clarity!

I'm learning French and trying to teach my boys. College is still free in a lot of places in Europe. It's sad that they may have to leave America to have a better life.

Lovely poem. It depicts the raw, sad truth. Yet, I too hope to keep thinking like a child.

Good one shot!

This is so true and we see it everywhere.

So true. True but sad. That's why we must go against the grain and make a difference every day :-)

So beautifully true... and as a child what we think can be totally different than what an adult that sometimes thinks ... when not has his nose on the daily grind... Liked it.

yes - think we really have to be careful not to become like the people we never liked when we were children...nice and thought provoking one shot

i loved every single word of this....maybe its a lesson we should be taught...but life knocks you so much that you do end up being selfish...a great one shot

I hate those adverts which end "...because you're worth it!" (L'Oreal, I think). They epitimise the world view that we should pamper ourselves all of the time. What happened to good old fashioned responsibility?

Oh so true - melancholy, celebratory, etc., all wrapped up in years, memories and a beating heart.

Now there's a valid argument for dying young ;) Seriously, it's exhausting to be constantly giving of yourself to people who just take. Selfishness and self-care are not the same thing, so do something nice for yourself today.
