How to Sleep Like a Burrito

OYT sleeps like a 5-layer Taco Bell burrito. I don't know how he does it. Even The Engineer, who sleeps in flannel pj's and has two blankets on his side to my sheet only, thinks the kid ought to just melt. He doesn't. Maybe it's the fleece...

Here's the wrapper. Four fleece blankets and comforter.

When he was born, he received a lovely fleece blanket (that would be the turquoise one poking out of the roll, with skating penguins.) It got so worn you could see through it, so his grandparents bought him one with trains, which were his obsession at age 5. We thought he'd put the penguins away, but no, he just started dragging two blankets around the house.

Round Three. Now both of those blankets were worn out, so we try again. With a YELLOW blanket. Remember, this is the boy we used to call YellowBoy. Nope. Now he was dragging THREE blankets around, but always the penguins touching his skin, and the other two added on top.

Next time, he decided that camo was the way to go. By now, I knew no blankets will be put away, but at 12, he'd stopped dragging them around the house so what's one more fleece blanket in the bed?

So each night, he carefully layers each of the blankets, in order of receipt, then I put the big comforter on top. Next, he rolls around until he's a total burrito, his arms pinned inside. He sleeps like a rock, I mean, a burrito.

Mornings are fun. He's hard to bring to consciousness, but one sure way is to grab the edge of the “tortillas” and begin pulling. He rolls over and over until he unrolls and then the burrito is gone, and the sweet growing-way-too-fast boy heads for the shower.

Do your kids have weird sleeping rituals? Do you?

The only sleeping thing with me is that I HAVE to have a pillow to hug, b/c I'm a side sleeper. It started when I was in high school and I can't sleep w/o it. The one time I was in the hospital overnight, I didn't have it and I slept horribly (of course it was loud, my roommate snored and the nurses kept coming in to check my vitals).

wow. i would melt. barely a sheet for me, only to cover my mid section cause the feet need to be free....my youngest starts wrapped and ends out and spread everywhere...

I would melt for sure! Half the time I just sleep with the sheet. Even in winter. My wife likes to cocoon, but I don't.
Bet it's funny to unroll him every morning.

I've had like five or six blankets on me when I was sick, but couldn't get warm because of a fever. I can't imagine having so many on the regular basis though. I think I would just melt into a puddle of "ughhhh soooooo hooooooootttt".

But, I would highly suggest getting a video when you wake him up in the morning, because that just sounds hilarious.

Yup, I'm a sheet person most of the time, of course it does get pretty cool in this part of the world so I usually use my cellular blanket in the winter.

I agree, the unrolling would make a great video, you could submit it to AFV and maybe win a few bucks.

My oldest sometimes sleeps with his head hanging out of the bed.

I like to burrow, but I don't want to be wrapped up like that.

Every night we have to wrap our cat Rocko up in a blanket and shove medicine down her throat. We call her our little purrito.

I like to be chilly and covered but not wrapped, he definitely is in there 'snug as a bug' lol

He has to be the most darling Burrito ever!

My son did that until he was 6-7 years old, and probably might have continued till the present, but we managed to deter him. So now, his favorite pillow cover, his favorite baby blankie all sit in a stack next to his pillow. When morning comes, they're on the floor and lovingly restored to their positions. :D

I love childrens' rituals!

Honestly, I don't know how kids can sleep in the positions they do. Is that burrito safe? Can he get free on his own?

I always wove my fingers on the edge of the pillowcase, and still do. There's something about it, a coolness, that I find very pleasing. I have no idea why.

I hadn't thought about the safety aspect, it could be dangerous if there was a fire.

As for AFV, I don't like the programme either, hubby does, but I wouldn't hesitate to send them a video just the same.

Hi Tina .. that's amazing to read! And the little one said roll over ... and out he fell ..

Fun - but horrifies me .. who hates being tied up in sheets, blankets et al .. and enjoys the freedom of moving around .. and definitely not being layered up with blankets!

Cheers - great memory post though - Hilary
