Favorite Genres Blogfest from Alex J. Cavanaugh

First let me introduce our host, Alex J. Cavanaugh.  Alex’s blogfests are best – probably because he’s one of the best out there - supportive, helpful, and always willing to promote what his buddies are doing.  His posts are chock-full of shout-outs to bloggers famous and those just getting started.  He’s written two best sellers: CassaStorm and CassaFire and is working on his third.  (Link in sidebar to CassaFire).

The premise is simple:  What are your favorite genres of
                          Movies
             Books
             TV shows
What is your guilty pleasure, in any of the above categories.

My favorite movies are post-apocalyptic science fiction.  There are several reasons these appeal to me, and one of them is that they’re also The Engineer’s favorites, so I’ve seen a lot of them.  It used to be I’d pick a movie, he’d suffer through, he’d pick a movie, I suffered through, and then we’d agree on a movie the third time.  Didn’t take us long to realize that we both liked these, so we kinda gave up on making the other person suffer.

We also like them because they closely simulate what it would be like to start over, and had The Engineer been born a couple of generations in the future, he’d be dragging us to Mars to colonize it.  You know what?  I’d go.  Really does sound like fun.  He’s already working on getting us “off grid” as in living self-contained.  Bring on the zombie-apocalypse, we’re almost ready.

My favorite books, though, are murder mysteries.  I get plenty of sci-fi in my movies, and frankly I like to SEE my sci-fi.  I’d rather not see a grisly murder scene thankyouverymuch, so I read about them.  Some favorite authors are Karin Slaughter (like that’s not a pen name) andLisa Gardner.

My favorite TV shows have varied greatly over the years.  Right now, it’s Big Bang Theory.  I told The Engineer he most resembles Leonard (the least nerdy and best looking) but in actuality, he’s Sheldon – not with the OCD and cleanliness issues, but with the brain and talking about stuff the rest of us just say, “Huh?” to.  Don’t tell him though.  He likes being Leonard.

Guilty Pleasure: J.D Robb’s …in Death series.  The perfect books: sci-fi, murder mystery, continuing character development across the (at last count) 35 books.  She churns them out, but each one is unique and the crimes she comes up with, well, I wonder what she reads and dreams about because wow, these are some twisted crimes.  Lots of really steamy sex, and lots of humor.  Eve Dallas, the lead detective is an ass-kicking force to be reckoned with, no social skills, no fashion sense, but always gets her perp.  If her husband were real, he’d be at the top of my top five list…

What are your favorites?  Too late to join the blogfest, but you could fill my comments with your picks…and if you’re a visiting participant, I’d really appreciate a direct link to your post.  Happy Favorite Genre Day!

Oh, I love the Big Bang Theory. I tell my significant other that he's like Leonard too although I think he'd more like being Sheldon. =)

I got into Big Bang Theory after my kids started watching endless repeats of them. Now I watch them without the kids!

Murder mysteries are cool to read about. It can definitely be too graphic to watch.

Interesting list. Glad you and The Engineer found something you can enjoy together. Not always easy and it's important to share interests. Good for you! I can understand the murder scene thing. Mysteries plot-wise are often some of the most interesting and they sure keep you turning pages when they're good.

The Husband and I NEVER agree on movies or tv shows. Hooray for teevo or we'd be in divorce court by now...although, The Big Bang Theory is a RARE fav of both of ours. Probably because we have a "Sheldon" in the family, so we both fully relate to the show.

I do enjoy the J.D. Robb series, which is funny because I don't read Nora Roberts otherwise. Roarke is HAWT! I also like post-apoc (I write it, why wouldn't I like it??). And prefer sci-fi in visual form instead of written. Not to say I haven't read sci-fi; I was in love with Asimov's books starting in 4th grade. But the science tends to get in the way of my enjoyment, and I rarely have to worry about that in movie form.

Hi, Tina,

Popping over for the blogfest... Nice to meet you, new follower here.

I'm a huge fan of The Big Bang Theory. And I've never heard of that series you feel so guilty about. Might have to check it out!

The In Death series is probably my all time favourite series. She does such a good job of creating characters who grow and change but still remain true to themselves. Great choice!

YAY for Big Bang Theory. Great show!

My husband and I tend to agree on TV shows a lot more than movies. We both love Dexter, The Walking Dead and Spartacus. Not as easy to pick a good movie together but, thankfully, we both love a good comedy. ;)

I like your blog by the way, I'm a new follower. :)

Big Bang Theory is hilarious! We watch reruns every night. We've seen them all multiple times and they are still funny

I agree with you on watching vs. reading mysteries. For me it works the other way too for sci-fi movies. A lot of times I can't visualize some complicated piece of technology or situation in sci-fi books. That's partly the reason I'm looking forward to the Ender's Game movie - to finally figure out exactly how that whole thing worked!

We like the current superhero trend, with scifi and Paris movies. I used to suffer through his cop movies, I always chose scifi or fantasy like Pirates of the Caribbean.
btw - I'm not ready for the Zombie Apocalyse, so hold off a bit on that.

I try to get films my wife likes and thank goodness her favorites are the action films. When I'm watching films by myself I tend to lean toward foreign or more esoteric strange stuff that she doesn't care for.

I love murder mysteries they got me through grad school along with Neil Gaiman's Sandman series. You know that someone is going to die and that the sleuth is going to figure out who did it. Very relaxing.

Hi Tina .. I'd rather like a similar "The Engineer" around the house - that's great he's doing what he can to make you self-sufficient ..

I'm a 60s type music girl .. but give me a spread - I'm now into Bowie and Sting - couldn't understand them years ago!! That's the way it is .. I'll accept just about anything ... except horror! Good films, and now I must get back into reading books more - not just articles and checking out Wiki ...

Cheers and hope you're feeling better ... Hilary

How interesting to read about your favourite Genies, sorry, Genres. The 'Big Bank Theory', I mean, "The Big Bang Theory" is very popular over here in lil' ol' Britain.
Hey Tina, now that I've left one of my um eagerly anticipated, much loved comments, your life just got even gooder...
Seriously, you take care and maintain that positive focus.
Your adoring fan, Gary :)
