Today It's Ninjas

Today
it's ninjas
as my breakfast tableau
unfolds before me
they move in slow motion,
this rag-tag bunch
but it's serious
and,
surprisingly silent, as
they stalk
stray cats
with foam nun-chucks

Yesterday
was waterskiing,
skate boards suddenly transformed,
and their ten-speed boats
dangerously dragging
the Olympic athlete
down the street,
through the waves,
leaves dancing
out of their way
then lying scattered
in their wake

Let them play
Let them run
Let them be
creative kids

For tomorrow,
comes soon enough
they'll be serious later,
abandoning freedom, for
lessons, homework, chores
but for today,
they're just ninjas.

It's One Shot Wednesday. Write a poem (no restrictions, ANY style goes) and link up.

What a wonderful imagination! The humor blends so well with the seriousness...I love it.

Nice, I too like the lines Tolbert selected especially and you are so very right, childhood is so very short, even shorter in today's world.

Usually one would be uneasy about ninjas lurking about their breakfast table, but this time it all seems so quaint and fun. Nice One Shot.

That brings back great memories, I used to have a couple of ninjas at my breakfast table. You are not only a poet, but a wise parent too.
Enjoy them, they grow so fast.

My ninjas are all serious now, careers and families. But I have a brand new little ninja, almost eight months old, and we will chase cats with foam nun-chuks together. Loved this poem.

It's great to watch kids playing in the leaves. They can make a fun toy out of anything.
